Sailing Around Narragansett Bay: A Little History and a Lot of Fun

It’s not just the beautiful open water or the salty breeze — it's the feeling that you’re sailing through history.

A Bay Full of Stories

Long before yachts and sailboats dotted the Bay, the Narragansett people lived along these shores, fishing and traveling these waters by canoe. Then, in the 1600s, European settlers arrived, and Narragansett Bay quickly became an important spot for trade and exploration.

By the 1700s, Newport — one of the Bay’s best-known towns — was one of the busiest ports in America. Ships from all over the world came and went, and when the American Revolution hit, the Bay saw its share of naval battles. (Hard to imagine cannon fire where we now watch sunsets!)

Fast forward to the 1800s and early 1900s, and Newport became a summer playground for America’s richest families. Sailing was the thing to do — and beautiful yachts filled the Bay. It’s part of why Narragansett Bay is still so tied to the spirit of sailing today.

Why Sail Here Today?

Narragansett Bay is a dream for sailors — calm enough for a relaxing afternoon, but big enough to make you feel like you’re on a real adventure. The winds are steady, the views are amazing (think lighthouses, rocky coastlines, and colorful seaside towns), and there’s always something happening on the water, from casual sails to major regattas.

Whether you’re brand new to sailing or you’ve been at the helm for years, sailing around Narragansett Bay is a one-of-a-kind experience. You’re not just catching the wind — you’re catching a little piece of history too.
